Research by motoring organization shows that one of the biggest additional costs to drivers after receiving a (driving under the influence) DUI or (driving whilst intoxicated) DWI judgement is the hike in their motor insurance.
Indeed being arrested or receiving a citation for driving under the influence can sky-rocket your insurance quotes and charges. For some the increase in cost can make the cost of driving unaffordable after a DUI or DWI case, which can lead to los of income, loss of jobs and even in some cases put stress on home life that can lead to a break down in a relationship. No doubt falling prey to DUI or DWI can be a real millstone!
But there are ways to get around the worst of the expense of finding future auto insurance and people looking for cheap DUI auto insurance can, for example, by filing an SR22 although assistance may be needed from insurance advisors to achieve this (amongst other solutions, of which more later) in order to manage the cost of getting back on the road.
The penalties for being convicted of a motor vehicle offense involving being under the influence of alcohol or drugs are potentially serious. For a first time offense you would typically have to pay a large fine as well as having “points” added to your license. Of course if you already have points against you for other things, or you gain more in the future this will mean that your license will be suspended.
Any further DUI/DWI charges will inevitably lead to having your license suspended. In some US states it’s not uncommon to have a fines in excess of $10,000 levied aginst you, as well as having any existing insurance policy cancelled and no recourse to any rights to claim. Worst case scenario… a repeat DUI/DWI offense can lead to time in jail!
In a nutshell, a DUI or DWI conviction signals a red flag to insurers and you will automatically be see an a ‘high risk’ and future premiums will be escalated accordingly. Indeed CBNC reported at the end of 2009 that typical overall costs of being found guilty on DUI or DWI charges could be anywhere from over $9,000 to as much as $24,000 with post-DUI auto insurance accounting for up to $7,500 of that huge bill!
